If you’re a Linewife, you know that the heart of the home doesn’t run on a standard 9 to 5 clock. It runs on a weather radar, sudden phone calls, and the absolute certainty that dinner plans will change.
Managing a kitchen when your lineman could be home in twenty minutes — or gone for a week or more — throw in picky kids… well, that takes a special kind of strategy. It’s all about flexibility, comfort food, and meals that can win. Let’s not forget when they do come home, they are craving that home cooked meal!
The Golden Rules of Line Life Meal Prep
When the storm duty call comes, the kitchen routine shifts instantly. Here is how to keep the chaos organized and ensure everyone stays fed, without wasting any food!
- Keep an eye on the forecast — plan bigger meals for days where the sun is shining and the winds are calm. Though sometimes there are still disruptions, knowing the weather won’t play a factor is a win in my book.
- The “Hold” Meals: Pivot your meal plan toward dishes that actually taste better the longer they sit on “warm” or that reheat beautifully the next day. Think slow-cooker, roasts, shredded chicken tacos, and baked ziti.
- Storm Stock — Keep a dedicated shelf for your lineman’s quick go-to favorites: beef sticks, granola bars, energy drinks, and my ultimate go-to for my lineman for the heat, Pedialyte and hydration packets.
One of my favorite things to do for my lineman is when he has been on a 24-hour shift, is to make sure his lunch cooler is ready to go for him for when his rest time is up. Loading up waters, snacks, a grinder or soup to go, or loading up his heat-up lunch box with some warm leftover lasagna or Golabki, for when he may get a moment to eat.
Keeping Comfort in the Chaos
Ultimately, the linewife kitchen isn’t just about food — it’s about providing a soft-landing space after a grueling shift. It’s the smell of a home-cooked meal after a week away when he steps through the door.
We might roll with the punches and our dinner times might be completely unpredictable some days, but the kitchen is always open and the hugs are always waiting for when he gets home.
